Where the gap trick pays rent
Before you've even said "un-adding," you're already doing this everywhere: change from a $10 bill, the swing between 38°F this morning and 71°F this afternoon, or how many points your team is up by. Every one of those is just "how far apart are these two numbers" — the gap, in a work shirt.
Un-adding: the world's sneakiest disguise
Every subtraction problem is secretly an addition question wearing a mask. 10 − 6 = ? really means "what do I add to 6 to climb back up to 10?" Answer the addition, and you've answered the subtraction for free.
The same minus sign, two different jobs
Hand a cashier a $10 bill for a $6 coffee and you get $4 back — that's take-away: start with something, remove some, see what's left.
But 7 and 3 also just... stand 4 steps apart on a number line. No taking, no removing — just the gap between two spots. Same answer, 7 − 3 = 4, two completely different pictures in your head. Knowing both makes you dangerous.
